Euler’s Stag is a tactile teaching aid of particular value to students who are visually impaired, but of general utility to all SPECS students. By feeling its surface, the students can explore a variety of mathematical concepts of relevance to students across the school. An audio description can be accessed by scanning a QR code on the model’s plaque.
Euler’s Stag’s design was the joint venture of James Collett and Naomi Hargraves, with Heather Tymms being involved in initial design discussions as a student consultant. The piece was sculpted and moulded by Naomi.
The plaque was sourced through the RNIB and exhibits braille alongside raised text as well as a QR code. The project was initially funded by a Learning and Teaching Innovation Centre award and then, in its final stages, by SPECRA and Equality, Diversion and Inclusion. Euler’s Stag, which is close to life-size, is a sculpture that has been cast in bronze by AB Fine Art Foundry and mounted on a vertical live-edged oak plinth provided by Ternex Ltd, a local sawmill. The plinth and supporting structure have been constructed and installed by Mtec Fine Art.
